Free Vegetable Seeds Well this is currently just setting up a page for later elaboration. Basically, I want to provide "samples" of seed that make up our heritage so that they can be further passed along. It is not my intention to provide a complete crop. It is my intention to merely provide folks with samplings of our history. This is not an attempt to compete with seed companies but in fact a push to help create an awareness and hence a market for these grand old vegetables. They have held onto a few heirlooms, due to demand, but have gone a long ways to distinguish themselves as the primary source for newly created hybrids that produce vegetables that can not be reproduced by saving seed. These new hybrids definitely have a purpose and I do appreciate the efforts being put forth. However, let's not forget what got us here.Seedbanks are a wonderful thing. They are working hard to preserve our genetic diversity ... but individuals need to retain a bit of self-sufficiency instead of relying solely on these. It is to this end that I desire to provide samples of heirloom vegetable seed that otherwise many people would not even be aware existed. |
